Isle Royal National Park

Lake Superior

Michigan

y painting of Isle Royale must impart the mystique of the isles unseen magic and beauty. So much of the wildness is only inferred, tracks and traces offer clues to this remarkable arcane world however it will, for us, forever remain veiled, mysterious and elusive. I am intrigued with passage. The passage from fire to ice and stone to earth. The passage of lichen to moss and moss to orchid. The passage of the bee through the orchid and flower to fruit. Life to death. Passage... the river of time.

I will paint an image of pink lady slipper orchids at trails edge growing up from a moist bed of sphagnum moss, twin flowers and Canada dogwood scattered below ... from moss to orchid. The background will be ancient, time worn basalt covered with lichen and emerald moss ... from rock to soil.

The eye will be drawn to the vibrant colors of emerald mosses, colorful lichens and stunning pink orchids all illuminated by brilliant sunlight from above. But when one finally pauses to observe the entire image, there, in the black mud of the trails edge will be a solitary wolf track slowly filling with water ... marking passage of the islands seldom seen mystic wolf.

The painting will simply be called : “ Passage ”
