No Fear Plein Air: A Beginner’s Guide to Sketching Flora Outdoors

Escape the studio and get outside to sketch the diversity and beauty of plants in nature. Experience the fulfilling immediacy and intimacy that occurs in your sketching that only occurs when you take the time to slow down and record your surroundings while you are outside. Receive instruction on basic equipment, techniques and tricks to creating successful watercolor and graphite plant sketches en plein air. Beginning with short lectures in studio on technique as well as botany we soon escape to the museum grounds where we can practice what we just learned while observing and recording the amazing beauty and diversity of the museum’s flora.

TUITION: $160 members/$210 nonmembers


Beginning Photography: Learning in Nature

Prerequisite: Must have a camera that you can adjust ISO, aperture and speed
A good photo is a careful blend of a good composition and an understanding of your camera. There are many ways to get "correct" exposure, and the end -results all look very different and tell different stories. Learn how to make wise choices on ISO, shutter speed and aperture to take control of your image. There will be 4 optional weekly morning field trips off the museum grounds where we can explore, discover and practice what you have learned.

More Than a Nature Journal: Creating a Visual Chronical of the Natural World

So much more than a journal or a diary, a visual chronicle is a is a powerful tool that offers a place to record and consider your thoughts, feelings, ideas, observations, and relationship with the natural world around you through the expressive skills of sketching and writing.  This class will guide you through an artful journey of discovery with simple activities designed to increase your powers of observation of the external world while exploring and reflecting upon your personal inner responses to it.

Mt Lemmon Chronicles: Artful Exploration, Discovery and Reflection

Create a Visual Chronicle during a full-day trip artful journey on the mountain. This class will guide you through a journey of discovery with simple activities designed to increase your powers of observation of the external world while exploring and reflecting upon your personal inner responses to it. Plenty of time is set aside for watercolor and graphite plein air sketching and writing to bring you closer to the natural world of Mt Lemmon.

Flight School: The Fine Art of Photographing Birds in Flight

Prerequisite:  Participants are required to have a DSLR and at least a 300mm telephoto lens along with a good understanding of the manual control of it.
This more advanced photography workshop will teach you about the habits and adaptations of the magnificent raptors that grace our skies. The class also provides clear instruction in the challenging art of photographing birds in flight. Emphasis will be on capturing images of birds in flight with a large portion of the class dedicated to an on-site field experience. Time is also set aside to learn the basics of properly processing images and reviewing and critiquing the final results.

TUITION: $175members/$225 nonmembers
